In January 2004, The Choose Life Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to a group of community leaders to help people, from Blue Hill to Jonesport and Mount Desert Island, living with cancer. This grant provided the impetus to establish a cancer resource program and facility for patients, their families, and supporters. The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center was incorporated as a nonprofit organization in June 2004.

The American Cancer Society estimated that more than 600 people in Hancock and Washington Counties were diagnosed with cancer in 2005. They also suggest that one in two men and one in three women will have cancer during their lifetimes. Such statistics indicate that nearly everyone will, at some point, be affected by cancer, whether personally or through a loved one.
