Walkers-1Cancer Walk Better Than Ever!

The 11th annual Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center’s ‘Walk for Life’ on Saturday, May 21 had a great turnout and was a grand success. Michael Reisman, Executive Director of the Beth Wright Center reported, “This year’s Walk was excellent - we had a great turn out, lots of auction items, clear weather and many activities. Plus the sponsors, donors, volunteers, teams and walkers helped us raise over $30,000!”

“Live music by the University of Machias Ukulele Club set the mood for the Chinese Auction run by Tuscan Lodge 106, at the Masonic Hall. The kiddie train, face painting, puppet making, and pinwheel making were all very popular,” remarked Reisman.

At the Addison Town Hall, DJ Clyde played music all day while the registration, opening ceremony, BBQ and bake sale took place. Dwight Carver offered the invocation, Michael Reisman said words of thanks and awarded plaques to recognize the sponsors of the Walk For Life, and Debbie Kelley sang a song dedicated to Beth Charczynski Wright, the Center’s namesake.

Walkers-2“Special thanks goes to Committee Members; Dean McGray, Daria Alexander, Ron Carpenter, Jeffrey Bailey, Bill Nichols, and Maria Strout. Twyla Charczynski, Joe Charczynski, Deb deMoulpied, Lucille Larue, Ron Carpenter, and Patti Devericks are also to be highlighted and acknowledged for securing over 65 auction items. Nancy Owen cooked a wonderful lunch and we were very pleased to have the support of the Narraguagus High School National Honor Society and their faculty advisor, Lisa Emerson. Angela Rackliff of Machias Savings Bank was a tremendous help as she kept a tally of all of the dollars raised for the Center and helped serve lunch,” added Reisman.

“The team involvement was a great source of support for the Walk. Cherryfield Fire Department Auxiliary, Curves Downeast - Stomping Out Cancer, Downeast Family YMCA Aqua Aerobics, Faith Mountaineers, Yoga and Reiki Team, Narraguagus High School National Honor Society, Nichols – Grimmel – Perkins, Robin Cassandra Star Dudette and the Dudas, The Warriors, Union Congregational Church of Hancock, and Wishing For A Cure. The people involved are what make this event so impressive. All of the volunteers that helped to make the event flow smoothly, the sponsors and the people who participated in the Walk are greatly appreciated.”

Ride For Life Success

Ride For Life Success!

DSCN0078The 7th Annual Beth C. Wright Ride For Life, held Saturday September 10, was a great success. This year $22,379.00 was raised through sponsor fees, registration fees, and pledges collected by the 100 riders who participated in the various rides. All of the programs and services of the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center are offered at no charge, so a successful Ride For Life is essential to help us meet our program expenses.

Thank you to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, Poor Boy's Gourmet Restaurant, Nova Foods, and the Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop for being the gold sponsors of this year's Ride and to Acadia Realty Group, Friend & Friend, Freshwater Stone, James L. Pendergist, CLU, and Tradewinds Market for being silver sponsors.

DSCN0041Thanks also go to the organizing committee, led by Co-Chairs Meredith Friend and Tom Collins and composed of Marjorie Yesley, Jim Green, Cathy Planchart, and Amy Schwartz who put in many months of meetings to make the day a success. Thank you also to the forty-five volunteers who spent a good part of their Saturday overseeing the water stations, directing traffic, serving food, and setting up and breaking down the venue at the Surry School.

Special thanks to Mary Ann DeRaps, principal of the Surry School for the use of the school grounds, the Surry Fire Department and the Blue Hill Fire Department for their help with traffic control, and the Ellsworth Amateur Wireless Association for their help with communications during the Ride.
